Women’s Sexual Health

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, more than 43% of American women (about 40 million) experience some form of sexual disorder. Any woman can experience Female Sexual Dysfunction at some point in her life. See… they even have a term for it: Female Sexual Dysfunction.

In fact, the drug companies are actively looking for a Viagra® type medication for women. The belief is that they can do something to increase a low libido, or the sexual desire in women.

If you poke around on the Internet, you’ll find information about orgasmic disorder, sexual arousal disorder, sexual aversion disorder, sexual desire disorder, and sexual pain disorder.

But not to worry. These are all clinical terms to describe psychological and/or physical challenges women face with sex.

What you can do

There are many problems that can keep you from enjoying sex. They include

  • Lack of sexual desire
  • Inability to become aroused
  • Lack of orgasm, or sexual climax
  • Painful intercourse

 

These problems may have physical or psychological causes. Physical causes may include conditions like diabetes, heart disease, nerve disorders or hormone problems. Some drugs can also affect desire and function.

Psychological causes may include work-related stress and anxiety. They may also include depression or concerns about marriage or relationship problems. For some women, the problem results from past sexual trauma.

Occasional problems with sexual function are common. If problems last more than a few months or cause distress for you or your partner, you should see your come see us.

We’ll determine if there is any physical or medical reason for your lack of desire. If so, there are several treatments can recommend. If not, we may refer you to a therapist who specializes in sexual dysfunction, or if applicable a couples therapist where you and your partner can discuss the issue together.
