DEENA ADAMS CNM/NP

Deena Adams was a labor & delivery nurse in various hospitals within the San Joaquin Valley for 12 years. During that time she was raising her children & shuffling all the duties that come with running a home & having a very busy & fulfilling career. She loved her job but felt she was being called 2 a greater purpose. "I felt like I could make a difference in how a woman experiences the entire pregnancy as well as the culmination of the pregnancy..CHILDBIRTH". "I believe giving back to the community is important & felt doing this could have such a positive impact". Once she became a single parent when her smallest & 3rd child was 4 yrs old she really felt driven to do "more". Through the encouragement of her family friends & Dr Adams whom she worked with @ St Dominics Hospital, she took the plunge. Her two older children no longer lived @ home so she sold her home & moved to the bay area. She graduated from UNIVERSITY CALIFORNIA SAN FRANSISCO MIDWIFERY PROGRAM & joined the ATHENA MEDICAL CENTER team in Jan 1998. The added benefit for her was that when she went thru menopause a few years later she was in a perfect place to do the research. She was powerfully motivated, since "it" was happening to her. Dr Adams was a big help also since "it" was happening to his wife. Again she was driven to change the quality of the experience for women @ the other end of the spectrum from childbearing. "I'm loving life & living large in spite of all the changes going on in my body!" that's why she's a perfect health care provider for women 18-80. She's been there, seen it & done it ALL.

DR. ADAMS

Dr Adams grew up in East St. Louis, Ill and attended the prestigious John Burroughs Prepatory High School in St. Louis County. Upon completion he matriculated to Amherst College in Massachusetts. He was accepted into The University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1976 from which he graduated in 1980. Dr Adams completed his residency at Letterman Army Medical Center in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1980 to 1984. The United States Army paid for his medical education so Dr Adams was thrilled to serve in the military from 1984 to 1988 in Seoul, Korea and Heidelberg, Germany. He was an officer with the rank of Major on staff in the Ob/Gyn department as repayment during those years. After an Honorable Discharge from the US Army he joined Bay Valley multi-specialty group in 1989. He left Bay Valley in 1992 because he had a vision of how Ob/Gyn care should and could be improved upon. He opened his practice in Manteca, Ca, where I met his wife & now partner Deena. "Her desire to become a midwife and our mutual attraction and desire to affect how birth/and prenatal care should be given led to a perfect match" says Dr Adams. They moved to their present location in 1998 and continue to evolve with the goal of developing a women's center different than any other. "One that is empowering and progressive in its nature & to the core of its being".

THE COUPLE & PRACTICE

Dr Adams & Deena met while working together @ St Dominics Hospital in 1994. He was the new Doc in town from the Bay area full of energy & brimming with exotic fresh ideas. Having been influenced by the fact that he had seriously been all over the world, he had become aware that there were many ways to do anyone thing. He had a vision to create a holistic combination of all of the latest/greatest research with what he had learned abroad. He believed that the delivery of women’s health care services could be improved. In all that time he was “too busy” to get married or have babies of his own. “My only regret is that my wife & I did not have a chance to have children”.

Deena was a single mom passionate about doing everything in her power to help women have the best birth experience EVER. When she started working with Dr Adams she realized she had never known another OB/GYN LIKE HIM. Deena has 3 children: her daughter was born in a hospital in 1973 in Washington State. “It was a horribly frightening experience that felt like cruel & unusual punishment” she relates. She decided that she would take responsibility for & control of her next baby’s birth. She sought out a midwife & had her next 2 children @ home. “They were the most mind bending magical births”! The idea of alternative birth choices was born. After becoming an RN & working with so many doctors combined with her own personal birth experiences: meeting & working with Dr Adams was like a blast of “fresh air”.

Deena & Dr Adams were married in December 1998, not only were they perfectly matched professionally… their passion for their work soon spilled over into passion for each other. They discovered that opposites attract, that what they each contribute to the relationship created balance. “We keep each other going by always having each others backs. Working together for some couples can be really stressful & sometimes it is for us as well however because we share the same goals personally & professionally it’s actually how we keep things in perspective. Our mutual love & respect weaves its way through all our interactions & decisions.” As they conduct their business, working towards the same goals, providing those services it’s obvious that they are not only committed 2 their practice & the community, but to each other as well.
